Why We Should Never Give Up on a Luxurious Bespoke Suit

When we invest in a luxurious bespoke suit, we are paying for impeccable craftsmanship, absolute precision, high-quality materials, and immeasurable elegance. A quality bespoke suit is not only a costly investment; they are something we cherish, so it is crucial to ensure it lasts for as long as possible. If you own a vintage suit but feel that you can’t wear it anymore, there is no need to dwell on it. Your tailor will be able to restore your suit to its former glory, and you will be able to get some use out of it once again.

Understanding the Early Signs that You Need to Visit a Tailor

When we enjoy our bespoke suits too often, it is imperative to look out for the early signs of wear and tear. Doing so will ensure that problems are addressed in a timely fashion and that the longevity of your suit is significantly enhanced. Here are some of the common signs to look out for.

Worn-out lining – Being one of the thinnest and most used fabrics in a suit, excessive use or the curse of time might cause it to degrade or become torn.

Loose Stitches or Fraying Fabric – Over time, it is likely a bespoke suit will encounter small tears. If dealt with promptly, these aren’t usually a problem, but they can escalate if left unattended.

Fading or Stains – It isn’t uncommon for areas of a suit to become stained or faded. Again, the earlier this is dealt with, the easier it will be to restore.

Fit – As we get older, the shape and size of our bodies change. Making necessary adjustments when a bespoke suit isn’t fitting perfectly can also increase its lifespan.

The Biggest Challenges when Restoring a Vintage Suit

When giving a vintage suit a complete restoration, there are several challenges a tailor is likely to encounter. Firstly, matching the fabric and the colours can be a massive challenge as they may not stock them anymore. It is also difficult to work with fragile fabrics to maintain the suit’s original structure and historical authenticity. Vintage suit restoration is a highly delicate process that requires a lot of skill, knowledge, and patience.

Techniques Tailors Use to Restore Fabric and Preserve a Classic Look

Every experienced tailor will have a set of unique skills they have developed over time. However, some of the techniques they are likely to employ when restoring a vintage suit are as follows.

Lining Replacement – Depending on the state of the lining, your tailor may decide to replace it entirely.

Reweaving – This is something that requires a tremendous amount of skill. When repairing small tears or holes, a tailor will integrate new fibres into the original weave.

Reshaping – Tailors will often use a variety of pressing techniques to reshape and strengthen the integrity of the suit. Colour Restoration – There are several techniques tha

t can be used, but it is likely that a tailor will use specifically made fabric-safe dyes to restore the suit’s original colour and vibrancy.

Hand-stitched Repairs – To take care of loose seams and frayed edges, most tailors will meticulously hand-stitch them to enhance reinforcement without compromising the suit’s authentic style.

What We Can Do at Home to Help Preserve a Timeless Classic

There are numerous things we can do at home to enhance the lifespan of our favourite suits. Learning to incorporate good practices into our at-home suit maintenance can add years to their life.

Washing Advice – It is essential to keep washing to a minimum. Take your suit to the dry cleaners sparingly, as going too often can weaken its fibres. When needed, use a damp cloth to spot clean and a mild detergent to take care of small stains. Additionally, air your suit out after every wear. This will remove all moisture and prevent issues from arising in the future.

Ironing Tips – If you want to iron your suit, it is vital to only use a seam iron or garment steamer and always use a pressing cloth to prevent heat damage. It is also crucial to press as lightly as possible, as being too forceful can impact the structure of the suit. Use gentle strokes and pay close attention to how your suit reacts to the process.

Proper Storage – The storage of a suit plays a significant role in its longevity. Firstly, use a proper, high-quality, wooden hanger. This will help maintain the shape of the shoulders, which impacts its entire structure. Store your suit in a cool and dry place in a breathable garment bag, and always ensure it has been air-dried before putting it back into storage. Making these minor adjustments to how you store your suit can have tremendous results.
