Suit Alteration Limitations: What Your Tailor Can and Can’t Do

Bespoke tailoring is a fine art that requires a meticulous level of attention to detail, absolute precision, and years of experience. However, there are always limitations to what a master tailor can achieve. Often, if something can’t be done or a job gets turned down, it is because it simply wouldn’t work and attempting to do it could tarnish the reputation of a tailor’s craftsmanship. Today, we are going to discuss suit alterations and limitations. Sartorial experts will strive to deliver excellence in every possible way, and if they say something can’t be done, they are probably correct. Hopefully, this guide provides an insight into what your tailor can achieve when you need your bespoke suit adjusted.

Why Visit Your Tailor for Suit Alterations

If you’ve had a bespoke suit made, you will understand the confidence and sophistication it exudes. Unfortunately, our custom suits don’t fit forever, so adjustments and alterations are a necessary part of owning such a fine garment. Maintaining a flawless look is essential, and here are some of the reasons one might visit their tailor to make a few changes to their luxury ensembles.

Everyone Wants Their Old Suits to Fit Perfectly

Unfortunately, time isn’t always on our side, especially when it comes to our shape and size. Our old bespoke suits are timeless, and ensuring they conform to our ever-changing physique allows us to get as much joy as we can out of them.

Sometimes, Our Bespoke Suits Live an Exhausting Life

The more we use our bespoke suits, the more likely it is that minor signs of wear and tear will begin to appear. When we start to notice minor frays, loose threads, or any other imperfections, it is crucial for a tailor to put it right. Over time, the fabric of a suit might also thin, and this can result in extensive restoration.

Over Time, We May Have a Change of Heart

As we get a little older, our personal style is likely to change. However, this doesn’t always mean throwing away our luxury suits. If you want your old suits to align with your current style or want to keep up with evolving fashion, your tailor might be able to help.

When You Find a Vintage Suit that Doesn’t Quite Fit

Sometimes, we might find a second-hand suit that tugs at our heartstrings. Vintage suits can tell a thousand stories, and when we come across one we love, it isn’t easy to leave it on the rack. Often, it is essential for a tailor to make alterations to ensure we can get the most out of these classics.

What Our Tailors Can and Can’t Do

When a Suit is too Big and Too Small for Alterations

There are specific parameters that a tailor must work within when taking in or letting out areas of a suit. If they stray too far beyond them, the alterations will likely distort the shape and structure of the suit, or there may not be enough fabric to let out if the suit is too small.

Understanding the Intricacies of Altering the Shoulders of a Suit Jacket

When asking for shoulder alterations, your tailor will need to carefully consider the implications of this request. These are among the more complex adjustments to make in a suit and can’t always be carried out effectively. Significant shoulder alterations will require a complete reconstruction.

Adjusting the Pad Level of Your Shoulders

If the padding needs reducing or replacing, this is easy for your tailor to do. However, if your desired padding alters the natural slope of your shoulders, it can compromise the integrity of the suit while looking a little undesirable.

Making Changes to the Lapels and Collar

These are also on the list of the most complex areas to make changes to. Both the collar and lapels play a significant part in the overall aesthetics of a suit and often bring the entire piece together. Sometimes, adjustments aren’t structurally feasible, but when they can be altered, it does take a meticulous level of craftsmanship.

Altering the Sleeves of a Jacket

Adding or taking away a little length from the sleeve of a suit jacket is one of the most common and easily achievable alterations for a tailor to make. Providing there is sufficient fabric tucked away in the cuffs, the process should be straightforward and won’t impact the structure or integrity of the jacket.

Changing and Replacing Buttons

Giving the buttons a minor update is one of the simplest and most effective ways to enhance the aesthetics of your suit. Sometimes, changing and replacing the buttons is all it takes to give an older bespoke suit the elegance you desire.

Fixing and Replacing Shoulder Divots

When a suit doesn’t fit properly, it is likely that any excess fabric in the sleeve-head will cause shoulder divots. Sometimes, a minor adjustment can fix this issue, but there are instances when the entire sleeve may need to be reset.

The Button Profile of a Jacket

The entire silhouette of a bespoke suit relies heavily on the jacket’s button stance. A tailor will usually advise against making these adjustments as it can be detrimental to the entire suit, but it may be possible to give it a slight raise if the tailor is highly skilled.

Shortening the Jacket Length

Though it is possible to shorten the jacket length, it must be within reason. If you want a shortening that is too excessive, it can impact the pocket placement and in turn, misalign the suit’s overall proportions.
